The SEMI Silicon Materials Manufacturers Group (SMG) reported that global silicon wafer shIPMents in the first quarter of 2024 decreased by 5.4% quarterly to 283.4 billion square inches. Compared to 326.5 billion square inches in the same period last year, this represents a decrease of 13.2%.
SEMI SMG Chairman and Global Wafers Vice President and Chief Auditor Li Zhongwei stated that the decline in integrated circuit manufacturing facility utilization and inventory adjustments in the first quarter of 2024 resulted in negative growth in all wafer sizes. Compared to the same period last year, the shipment volume of polished wafers has slightly decreased compared to the shipment volume of epitaxial wafers.
It is worth noting that the increasing popularity of artificial intelligence has led to an increasing demand for technologically superior logic products and data center storage, and some semiconductor manufacturing facilities reached their lowest historical usage levels in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Silicon wafers are the primary foundational material for most semiconductors and an essential component of all electronic devices. These carefully designed slender discs have a maximum diameter of 12 inches and are the foundation material for most semiconductor manufacturing.
SMG is a sub committee of the SEMI Electronic Materials Group (EMG) that supplies SEMI members for the production of polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon, or silicon wafers (such as cutting, polishing, and epitaxy). SMG supports collaborative efforts in the silicon industry, including generating market data and statistical information related to the silicon industry and semiconductor market.
